Original 1900 recipe
Verbatim from the 1900 edition of the Cookbook for School and Home (Erken & Caroline Steen).

A rich spiced loaf cake from 1900 with eggs, sugar, cream, syrup, currants and candied peel, leavened with baking soda and baked in two tins for 1 to 1½ hours. Named after Fridtjof Nansen.

En rikholdig krydret formkake med korinter og sukat, oppkalt etter polfareren Fridtjof Nansen. Står i «Kager»-seksjonen i «Kogebog for skole og hjem» (1900), i tiden da Nansen-navnet var på alles lepper etter Fram-ferden.
Whisk eggs and sugar
Whisk the eggs and sugar airy for ½ hour.
Add wet ingredients and spices
Add the milk, cream, syrup, spices, the washed currants and the finely chopped candied peel.
Fold in the flour
Finally fold in the flour with the baking soda stirred into it.
Bake
Fill the batter into 2 well-greased tins and bake for 1–1½ hours.
