Original 1900 recipe
Verbatim from the 1900 edition of the Cookbook for School and Home (Erken & Caroline Steen).

Rocks from 1900: eggs and sugar are whipped, melted butter, lemon essence, flour, baking soda dissolved in milk, currants and slivered almonds are stirred in, spooned onto a baking sheet and baked 15–20 minutes. A Norwegian version of English rock cakes.

Rocks er små, ujevne småkaker med korinter og mandler – en anglo-inspirert «rock cake» som fikk innpass i norske kokebøker rundt 1900. Fra «Kager» i «Kogebog for skole og hjem». Merk at denne oppskriften ikke har priskolonne i originalen.
Whip eggs and sugar
Whip the eggs and the sugar for ¼ hour.
Add the rest
Add the melted butter, the lemon essence, the flour, the baking soda dissolved in the milk, the cleaned currants and the blanched, lengthwise-slivered almonds. Stir well together.
Drop onto sheet and bake
Drop the batter by the teaspoonful onto a greased baking sheet and bake for 15–20 minutes.
