Original 1900 recipe
Verbatim from the 1900 edition of the Cookbook for School and Home (Erken & Caroline Steen).

Rice porridge/risgrøt from Kogebog for skole og hjem (Erken & Caroline Steen, 1900), p. 103. Cooked from 375 g rice and 3¾ l milk. The rice is washed and scalded, put into boiling milk and cooked under a lid over low heat for about 2 hours, then salted. The total price at the time was kr. 0.60.

Risengrynsgrøt (risgrøt) er en av de mest kjente norske festgrøtene, særlig knyttet til jul og søndager, kokt på melk til den er tykk og kremet. Rundt 1900 var ris en importvare, og grøten var derfor et litt festligere innslag i husholdningen. Fra Kogebog for skole og hjem (Erken & Caroline Steen, 1900).
Wash and scald the rice
Wash the rice in cold water and scald it in a little boiling water.
Boil the milk
Bring the milk to a boil in a thick-bottomed pot.
Add the rice
When the milk boils, add the rice and set the pot on quite low heat.
Cook under a lid
Let the porridge cook under a lid for around 2 hours. Stir now and then so it does not burn.
Salt and serve
Take the pot off the heat, salt the porridge and serve, preferably with butter, sugar and cinnamon.
