Lay medium-sized cucumbers in cold water for 1 to 2 days, dry them well, and pack them into a crock on a thin layer of finely cut dill, which one must not otherwise be sparing with; likewise — if desired — lay cherry leaves in among the cucumbers.
Cover the crock with a wooden lid; through a small hole in it pour a solution of 1 L water to 45 g salt. Use enough of this mixture to cover the cucumbers. More brine is added over the following days as needed.
Now cork the hole in the lid. Set the crock in the cellar, and the cucumbers are ready to use after 6 to 8 weeks.
If you want the cucumbers sour, put them in a crock covered with a wooden lid after the brine has been poured over, and leave it in the kitchen or in another warm place for 8 to 14 days. Or you can add vinegar, mixing then 1 1/2 L vinegar and 1/2 L salt into 10 L boiling water. Mix this well and let it stand until the salt has dissolved.
