Cut white bread into slices like an ordinary Napoleon cake, toast it, and when cold spread it with butter.
Top them with a thick slice of Swiss cheese, sprinkle with salt and pepper, place on baking sheets and bake until the cheese melts.
Serve warm; 4 to 5 minutes is usually about right, so they can be put in as the soup comes to the table and will be ready in good time.
You can prepare them the day before if you are busy, so they only need to be put in the oven.
