Original 1900 recipe
Verbatim from the 1900 edition of the Cookbook for School and Home (Erken & Caroline Steen).

A rich yellow loaf cake from 1900 with 9 egg yolks, melted butter, whipped cream and almond essence, leavened with baking soda and cream of tartar, baked for about 1¼ hours.

Gullkake henter navnet fra den rike gule fargen ni eggeplommer gir. Kaken heves med natron og kremortartari – en tidlig hjemmelaget bakepulver-kombinasjon – og er en fyldig formkake til kaffebordet.
Stir butter with sugar
Stir the melted butter together with half of the sugar.
Stir the egg yolks
Stir the egg yolks with the rest of the sugar into a pale, thick mixture.
Combine the mixtures
Blend the two mixtures together well. Then fold in the whipped cream, the almond essence and the flour combined with the baking soda and cream of tartar.
Bake
Pour into a greased tin and bake at moderate heat for about 1¼ hours until the cake is baked through.
