20 lbs. fat scraps are put in the pot with 4 lbs. soda ash (if only fat is used, use 6 lbs. soda ash), 8 kander water (boiled water is always used for the soap).
The next morning it is boiled for 3 hours with constant stirring, 8 kander water being added a little at a time.
Finally the whole is boiled up with 6 handfuls of salt. It must be stirred the entire time. Ladle it into a tub and cover well.
6 hours later a little laundry blueing can be added.
From the leftover lye, excellent soft soap is made when it is mixed with plenty of boiled water and boiled for about ¾ hour.
It is ladled into a soap tub, sets on cooling, and is usable for all cleaning.
