Verbatim from the 1900 edition of the Cookbook for School and Home (Erken & Caroline Steen).

Historic Norwegian recipe for plums in vinegar from 1900. 3 kg plums, 1 litre vinegar, 750 g sugar, cinnamon and cloves. The plums steep in sweet vinegar brine for 8 days, the brine is reduced with spices and poured back cooled.

Put the plums in jars
Dry the plums and put them in clean jars or crocks.
Pour over the vinegar brine
Bring the vinegar and sugar to a boil, cool the brine and pour it over the plums. Let stand for 8 days.
Reduce the brine with spices
Pour off the vinegar and reduce it a little with a few cinnamon sticks and a few cloves. Cool.
Seal
Pour the cooled, spiced vinegar over the plums and tie the jars shut.
