Erken's soap recipe III from 1914: 1 kg rough tallow is boiled 1 hour with 1 bottle of lye and 2 liters of water while stirring constantly, poured into flat vessels, cut into square pieces when cold, or whipped out as soft soap.

About the dish

One of several soap recipes Erken gives in connection with the butchering, where tallow and fat scraps from the animal were put to use. "Rough tallow" is unrefined tallow and fat trimmings from butchering.

How to make it

    Boil the soap

    Put the tallow, lye and water in the pot and boil it all together for 1 hour, stirring constantly. Wear gloves and ensure good ventilation.

    Pour out

    Pour the mixture into flat vessels and let it set.

    Cut up

    When the soap is cold, cut it into square pieces.

    The soap can also be whipped out as soft soap.

Changes from the original

Measures modernized: 1 bottle of lye ≈ 7.5 dl (an old bottle). "Rough tallow" explained as unrefined tallow/fat trimmings. The method has been set out in steps. Working with lye requires gloves and good ventilation.
