How to make it

  1. 1

    Dry the rose hips

Dry the rose hips as soon as possible after picking: on a radiator, on a drying shelf above the stove, or in the oven after cooking. Light frames with a mesh bottom are suitable. Spread the rose hips in layers that are not too thick and dry at low heat, 20–30 °, for about a day. They can also be threaded on a strong string and hung under the ceiling in the kitchen or pantry, with the window open, until completely dry.

  2. 2

    Clean

Drying shrinks the rose hips by 50–60%, so 2–2½ kg of fresh rose hips become 1 kg dried. Rose hips that were not cleaned of blossom and sepals before drying are cleaned afterwards. You can also rinse the rose hips first, remove the blossom and sepals, halve them and dry them.

  3. 3

    Shake and store

When the rose hips are completely dry (pepper-dry), shake them in a basket so that all the seeds fall off. Store them in cloth or paper bags in a dry, airy place.

  4. 4

    Use

Soak dried rose hips in cold water overnight and boil them in the soaking water, for example for soup or porridge. Note: Rose hips withstand drying without losing vitamin C. Every home should have its own stock of rose hips for the winter, and rose hips are our richest source of vitamin C.
