About the dish

Baked apples with dates were a simple and slightly exotic dessert in 1914; dried dates were among the imported "southern fruits" Erken liked to use in the dessert chapter.

How to make it

  1. 1

    Prepare the apples

Remove the core with an apple corer and peel the apples.

  2. 2

    Fill

Pit the dates, cut them coarsely, and fill them into the hole in the apples.

  3. 3

    Place in the dish

Place the apples in a greased ovenproof dish, sprinkle the sugar over them, and pour the water into the dish.

  4. 4

    Bake

Bake in a hot oven (about 200 °C (390 °F)) until the apples are tender, about 30–40 minutes.

  5. 5

    Serve

Serve the apples warm, with or without whipped cream.

Changes from the original

Deciliters are used as the unit, and "hot oven" is given as 200 °C (390 °F). Greasing the dish has been made explicit.
