The cake is decorated with animal biscuits ("menageri") and letter biscuits from Sætre, showing that the book kept up with the biscuit products of its day.
Mix the batter
Cream the butter and sugar until pale. Add the eggs one at a time, then the milk and finally the flour mixed with the baking powder.
Bake
Pour the batter into a well-greased, floured tin, preferably with a loose bottom. Bake in a moderate oven for about 45 minutes.
Fill
Let the cake cool. Split it into 2 or 3 layers and fill with cream or fruit if you like.
Ice and decorate
Ice the top and sides with white or chocolate icing. Decorate with animal biscuits and letter biscuits (Sætre).
Measures converted from del. to dl. The number of servings is an estimate. No oven temperature is given in the original ("not too hot an oven").
